Woman's Club of Eustis

THE HISTORY OF THE HOUSE

In 1902 a group of women joined together to form the Woman's Club of Eustis as a study and discussion group which quickly involved itself in activities of and to the community. During the 1920's member growth was rapid with continuing community service much of which was innovative and forward thinking.

In 1925 a lot was purchased on the North Shore of Lake Eustis for $1,890.00. The lot was later traded for the Center Street property with additional lots being purchased and donated.

Construction was begun in 1930 and the building was dedicated on November 10, 1931. The mortgage was burned April 11,1935. The cost of construction was $9,452.44.

The entry of the building is approached between two Ionic columns to a verandah with two sets of double doors leading to a center entry hall with a rest room at each end. Two sets of frame double doors lead to a 40'x40' meeting room with an elevated stage on the east end, boasting a dressing room on each side.

The southern portion of the building contains a 20'x40' tea room which is accessible through French doors on either end as well as having access to the outside through French doors.

A 20'x20' kitchen is well equipped for entertaining up to 100 people for sit-down dinners, which is the maximum for our fire regulations.

A lovely balcony, with railing, extends across the western portion of the meeting room. Two lots at the rear are utilized for parking while two lots on the southern exposure are surrounded with landscaped gardens.

Architecturally, the facade is a non-pedimented distyle in antique Greek temple type. The portico with two ionic columns form the entry to the club. The pilasters base and capital are simple stucco relief detail that continue around the entire building to delineate the base and ceiling lines of the structure. To each side of this temple type facade are pedimented windows. Above the entry portico is a balustrade giving emphasis to the center section of the composition.
